Glyphosate is an organophosphorus herbicide known for its systemic and broad-spectrum properties. It primarily inhibits the enzyme enolacetone-based shikikin phosphate synthetase in plants, preventing the conversion of shikikin to essential amino acids like phenylalanine, tyrosine, and tryptophan. This interference leads to inhibited protein synthesis and eventual plant death. Effective against over 40 families of plants-including monocots, dicots, annuals, perennials, herbaceous plants, and shrubs-it is particularly destructive to the underground tissues of perennial deep-rooted weeds.
